Two hundred and thirty four

I really love this photo! It was evening and the sun was shining just right through the window of my old bedroom at my parent’s house. My daughter and I were hanging out. She was playing on the floor and we had the radio on. I decided to take some shots using the lovely light. It took a few trys to get the angle and composition right. It came out better than I anticipated. I love the lighting, composition and reflection. The reflection looks so different from what I myself look like in this photo. It really brings up questions about perception and reality. The fish bowl theory comes to mind. How a fish in a bowl sees the world distorted through his molded glass. Is that how we see the world? Through our distorted eyes, views, beliefs and experiences? Just a little deep philosophical thought for you. Discuss! 🙂

These shots were taken at another of my all time favorite places in the world, Maymont. It is a huge estate park in Richmond, Virginia. It has a petting zoo, wild animals and birds, beautiful gardens, trails, a waterfall, a mansion, the list goes on. I have been going there since I was a kid and I have SO many good memories. I wanted to get married there, but it was beyond my price range. This day was my first time back after living in Texas for 3 years. I can honestly say that every spring I would long for Maymont. It was one of the things I missed most about Virginia. Just talking about it makes me want to go there now! 🙂 The first shot is in their Nature Center, which is a large exhibit all about local Virginia wildlife. I was taking photos of the turtles in one of the aquariums and realized my reflection was in the glass. Why not use it for this project? Love the abstractness of this photo. I’m a sucker for reflection anyway, and turtles are frickin’ awesome. The second shot was sitting by the eagle exhibit while I was waiting for family to use the bathroom. The shot is ok, nothing great. On the other hand, it was a great day at Maymont, as usual!

One hundred and thirty-six

I must have been taking photos of something outside; the sunset, flowers, I don’t remember now. I do know that I took this shot of my reflection in the window of our back door. I love the abstraction of it. The obscureness of my face. The reflection of the outdoors behind me. The strange little design covering my face. I couldn’t have created a better layered image in Photoshop than I got with the reflection on some dirty glass.

I was alone at night, maybe my husband had fallen asleep, maybe it was the night he had CQ duty. There was left over sparkling wine in the fridge from New Year’s Eve. I poured myself a glass, sat down in front of this thing and took some shots using available light. I like this shot. I like the red colors, the bubbles in the bubbly, the composition. I also enjoyed the drink.

Day fifty-nine I was working on some photo magnets, which you can see in the background. They are a relatively easy craft using flat glass marbles, photos, drawings, magazine cutouts, whatever and small button magnets. I use my own photos and art. I have 10 years of film prints stacked up in my art cabinet and this is a great way to reuse them for something creative. Here is my hand cutting out a circle of an image. I enjoy making these. They look pretty cool when they are complete. See below for a photo of completed magnets.

The next day I was feeling more like myself. We were getting ready for my in-laws to come for a visit. Both of our cars needed to be cleaned bottom to top and inside and out. It was another warm day here in Central Texas. We spent the afternoon washing the cars. The sun was bright and I couldn’t help but notice that my reflection in the glass was very strong. I took a moment to run for my camera and snap a few shots. Not the best photo, but it was documenting my day. I would like to do more with reflections.
